Lowering My Ears

Had my ears lowered today.

That's Bermudian for "had a haircut", in case you were wondering.

This is only the third time I've been since moving to Bermuda, but when I called to make the appointment I discovered that my usual stylist (i.e. the one I had on the last two occasions) has left the country for the Cayman Islands. I think that's going to be a regular occurrence, a consequence of that fact that most (if not all) the hairdressers in the salon to which I go are expats.

You'll never hear the locals complaining about foreigners taking that kind of work away from them though. I wonder if that's because, along with waitressing, it's a job most Bermudians consider beneath them?

THis is a case in point that I have made on a number of occasions "Most Bermudians feel it is their god given right to have a decent well paying job".

While we should all strive for that, it's earned, not a birthrite.

I feel that there are plenty of jobs to go around, and as such, there should be no such thing as unemployment tax (What's happened with that anyways?). Christ I used to bag pack about 20 years ago and pull in $50 on Wednesdays, and that was 20 years ago!!! Pride doesn't feed the family. It's a personal beef of mine when I hear people say "There's no jobs out there", they just aren't looking hard enough!
