Think Tank

A group of Bermudians are in the process of setting up a new organisation to consider solutions to contemporary issues.

The Foundation for Bermuda Studies, whose motto is "Enlightening Bermuda Today For Tomorrow's World", is intended to be an independent, non partisan think tank, modelled along the lines of the Aspen Institute. The group intends to fund and publish research, to use this research to recommend public and private sector policies and to promote Bermuda as an international model for development.

It has been established by former cabinet ministers Arthur Hodgson and Lynda Milligan-Whyte, charity developer Michael Markham and NLP leader Graeme Outerbridge. Their inspiration was a recognition that much government planning is very short-term in nature, with little thought being given to medium- or long-term solutions to Bermuda's challenges. The group believes that addressing these requires an independent, academic organisation, which can look beyond the horizon of the next election.

The Foundation's first public event is likely to be a forum on colonialism in May, with speakers to include Bermuda's governor, Sir John Vereker.

A Limey In Bermuda wishes them luck.
