Northrock Slashes DSL Charges - Again

Not content with knocking $40 off their 256k DSL price, today Northrock carved off an additional $20, taking the price down to $78.95 per month for unmetered access.

I have no idea whether Logic has followed suit as they still haven't been assed to update their website, according to which they're still charging $139 per month. Of the rest, if their websites are to be believed, Transact.bm are charging $89.95, Cable & Wireless are charging $79.95 (although their DSL packages are only available to businesses anyway) and Fort Knox Bermuda are charging either $85 or $129 per month, according to whether you want to believe the information on their homepage or rates page.

Thus it appears that Northrock are now offering the cheapest DSL on the Island. While I applaud them for that, it does make the price gouging that was going on before even more apparent.

I'll believe an end to price gouging when I see it.

I have a friend living in Oslo and he is paying a shade under $60pcm (398NOK). For that he gets a DSL line with 1024/384 unlimited bandwidth.

Hardly compares really.

Now that the ISPs are starting to duke it out on DSL pricing, we need to get some competition vs BTC/Velocity for the network side of things. Their pricing remains unnaturally high.

Re price cuts -- "Mrs. Coehlo anticipates that this will be the end of the price decreases in this sector since the latest cuts put Bermuda Internet service on par with North America."

Not quite.

For 256K DSL, BTC costs $99 (including local calls) and ISP costs $69 = $168/month.

In the US, Verizon offers 1.5 Mbps (including both the DSL and ISP portions) for $29.95 per month.

Transact is slashing 512K to $99.00 a month and now offering 1 meg / 512K for $199.00 a month. Will Northrock follow? I sure hope so. Now if only cablevision would step into the picture and offer 5 mbit access right out of the gates for $100 a month. That would definitely blow the socks off of these ISP's.

Even if the ISPs reset their 512K pricing at $99, you still have the $109 BTC charge = $208 per month.

How can Transact provide 1 Mbps speed when the highest DSL you can get from BTC is 512K?

Does Cablevision have an ISP license? If not, all it could provide is an alternative to the BTC ADSL.

BTC are grinning from ear to ear all the way to the bank and seem to have no incentive (or plans) to bring their extortionate prices down. It’s surprising that this isn’t discussed more or that they appear to be under no pressure to reduce their fees from Government.

It’s encouraging, at least, to see the ISP’s prices going in the right direction through healthy competition.
