Best Before

Bermuda's supermarkets certainly cater to unusual tastes.

For locals wishing to build up their immune systems, the Island's grocery stores kindly offer perishable foodstuffs several days beyond their 'sell by' date. Thrill-seekers who enjoy playing Russian Roulette with their health can pick up fresh chicken breasts with no 'sell by' date at all. And the Island's historians can pick up a three-week old copy of Time or The Economist at the same time as their Corn Flakes.

The downside, of course, is that those of us who prefer their food and news to be fresh have to be a little more careful when filling our carts. So it probably serves me right that while shopping at the Shelly Bay Market Place this evening I picked up a copy of local magazine Um Um that, on returning home, I discovered dated from September 2002.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread from the dead, as it seems the most appropriate for the comment I wanted to make. As mundane as the topic may be, I'm interested to know what experiences others have had with the new Marketplace Milk - as nice as it is to have a competitor in the, err, marketplace, so to speak (even if all the milk is of the 'filled' variety), I've bought three containers of Marketplace Milk, two of which were decidedly 'off' within a day of being opened, despite being well inside the sell-by date. The milk in the third container, which was also within its sell-by date, seemed to have grains of milk solids floating in it. Has anybody else encountered these kind of problems? I have a hard time believing that I have that bad luck when it comes to milk products....

Something tells me that it would be illegal to have a picture of a real cow on the bottles.

Somerset marketplace is so bad it's hard to believe we accept it. never mind that staff get indignant and want to argue when you bring something back.

Had a loaf of bread with rat holes in it recently?? how about pork thats fresh unfrozen and rotton, oops it was dated today. Go figure.

I swear marketplace staff get their bonuses on what they keep on the shelves.

The stores are dumps, were just not seeing it anymore....but somewone must be... Jc are you listening???

Sorry couldn't resist a reply. Good thing the rat was gone they would have charged you for the meat.HEHEHEHEHEHE just a little humor.(not an attack).
