Fares Fair

Amid all the political bad news at the moment, last week's announcement by Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown that he has signed regulations to increase taxi fares by 20% and introduce shared rides to and from the airport is a rare bright spot.

Bermuda's taxi drivers haven't had a fare increase since 1997, making them long overdue for an inflation-linked one even in the absence of any improvement in service. The proposal to increase fares was originally linked to the drivers' acceptance of GPS legislation, defeated in the Senate last month, and despite the protests of the Opposition it seemed that the Government was keen to maintain that linkage.

Dr. Brown's change of heart is welcome, as is the news that both sides are now working to defuse the antagonistic situation over the GPS issue.

Awfully thoughtful of Dr. Brown to implement the fare increase at the end of the tourist season wasn't it?

I'm sure the taxi drivers have duly noted that.
