Phil, I really hate to be picky, but I think you spelt the UK city of 'ull wrong. The 'H' is invisible.

Many Blacks want to speak differently and have come up with their own slang such as Ebonics (Ebony Phonics). I went to school in the US in the 40's and 50's and approximately 30% of my classmates were Black and I lived in Bermuda in the 60's. In neither place was "ask" pronounced "ax" back then. There is always the possibility that "ax" evolved in Bermuda and was brought back to the US by the Armed Forces. For all these educators to spend time on trying to find the origin of pronounciation "ax" in place of "ask" is ridiculous. Ax is here to stay so as much as it may grate on some peoples ears it "ain't" going away. Dr. Hodgson may want to be careful, she is starting to sound like Bill Cosby wanting Blacks to think about what they say and do.
