The Bermudian Blogosphere
In the beginning, it was lonely.
When this blog started life back in August 2003, it was one of the first Bermuda-based blogs to come into existence. Since then, the number of blogs written by Bermudians, expats living in Bermuda, or tourists visiting the Island has exploded. While I link to the ones that I think have wide appeal in the sidebar, I thought it was about time for a brief rundown of the rest.
Many are personal, aimed primarily at friends and family, and infrequently updated. Often they tend to be short-lived. Bermuda’s first blog may have been Reminisces On A Life Lived, which ran between January and May 2003. Then came Killbot.bm and the now-defunct Bermy Adventures. Politics.bm and Pondblog followed in September and October 2003 respectively. Injured Innocence began around the same time.
Island Blog was an another account of an expat adjusting to life in Bermuda, which ran between April and July 2004. A Bermuda Blog began in June 2004 as a serious attempt to provide another perspective on Bermudian politics; unfortunately it hasn’t been updated since November.
One of the funniest personal sites still running is Eric Smith’s cardboardutopia, although anyone who doesn’t know this manic American expat personally might be forgiven for thinking he’s a psychopathic serial killer after reading some of his posts. Nitjan’s Blog is a personal account of my cousin-in-law’s student days in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jojo In Bermuda is possibly Bermuda’s first and only photoblog. Other personal blogs include Me In Bermuda, Sid In Bermuda (I see a pattern here!), My 2cents and The Bermuda Experience (one of the first blogs I’ve seen using Microsoft’s new blogging tool MSN Spaces). Devils Football Club has its own blog too, possibly the only Bermuda sports team to do so.
Bermuda-based blogs aimed at a wider audience include the technically-minded Caught In The Web (a collection of Chris Gibbons’ columns for the Bermuda Sun), SecureBermuda (which provides information about electronic security issues) and Bermuda Aplus PcMac Support. eMuse is an eclectic collection of occasionally-updated links to news stories that its author finds interesting. Bermuda Home is a new blog which seems to be somewhat experimental but could be interesting if the author sticks with it. Bermuda Cruise Blog is another new blog featuring reviews, photos, news and notes about cruising to Bermuda.
For an island of only 60,000 people, Bermuda’s blogosphere is thriving.

Glad to see that more and more ppl are starting to write. Are you all very close to each other too in real life? DO you all meet up or something, since its just a small island?

Mr Kiasu
We don't all know each other...it just feels as if we do.

You might think that Bermuda's bloggers would meet up regularly in real-life but this isn't the case. I've met Gavin Shorto of Pondblog and Christian Dunleavy of politics.bm only once, although we regularly correspond by email. cardboardutopia's Eric Smith and I have got together on a couple of occasions and also correspond fairly regularly. I've also met up with several of the people who comment here once or twice. But that's about the limit of it.

I think my blog epitomises the real "Bermudian blog" - meaning I haven't actually gotten around to updating it past every 6 months!!!!
Joking of course, I've just been really busy, and I guess the novelty wears off .. I've had a blog now since before it was cool ..
You can also add - www.davidson.bm to your list of Bermy bloggers as well..

and i - alex masters - a former blogger (2000-2004) turned photoblogger (2004-2005) once interviewed by some one from the royal gazette who, amazingly, got almost every aspect of my site wrong! even my handle :| quite embarassing really :( i'm in the UK now, but regular visits home /are/ made and my regular lunches at the green lantern should surely give me bermudian status :| *sigh* anyways.. http://www.photogenic.nu is where i'm at :) well.. for now.

Thanks for mentioning my blog, Phil. I'm happy to say that I have restarted the blog with a complete report on the motion to adjourn in the House of Assembly this evening.

Anyone interested in a mirror perspective of mine might want to check out A Bermy In Blighty.
Had to chuckle at the description of London's Tube, the pace of walking and the reaction provoked by doing a good deed for a stranger...

Another vitim of the blogging bug...
I have to admit, the MSN Spaces is a great service - very intuitive...

Your blog was mentioned in passing during tonight's motion to adjourn in the House of Assembly.
Mr. Dunkley had got to his feet to protest at the state of hospitals in Bermuda. One of his sources, it seems, was a new, anonymous blog entilted "Bermuda Medicine" (www.bermudamedicine.blogspot.com)
Not surprisingly, the Government objected to this being a creditable source.
Up got Walter Lister to deliver a not very convincing apologia of Government's policy on health care.
He then began to blast not just the Opposition, but the entire blogging community. "Anyone with a computer can start one," he said, "Now if the Opposition was in Government, they do everything according to a website, and that isn't right."
I've looked at the site in question, and it appears to be a perfectly valid one. I don't think it's any secret that Bermuda's health care system is in need of redress; and this website just serves to remind us of what we already know.
It was when Walter Lister criticized the UBP, not altotegther fairly, of 'playing politics' with the issue that your blog was mention.
"There's a website out there, that pretty much damns everything this Government does," he said, "It's called limey.bm"

Thank God for this blog and the other sites exposing the ongoing scandals of the day.
The malpractise outlined in www.bermudamedicine.blogspot.com
is outrageous. This man almost died from botched surgery and misdiagnosis. This is the same clique who kicked out the best surgeon we ever had at KEMH Dr. Spangenberger.
Of course the present gang of hoodlums running this island, and KEMH, do not want any blogs exposing the truth,as seen by the speaker shutting down debate in the house whenever it exposes the PLP's rule, which can best be described as government by malpractise.

Tut tut. If Mr. Lister is going to promote my blog in the House, the least he could do is get the URL right!

Ben,
Dr Spangenberger was not only a splendid surgeon and diagnostician saving many lives with the early detectection of cancer esp of colon, but one very nice gentleman also.
While he was not really kicked out they used the opp. to not renew his work permit as he explored other avenues for his talents mainly because they would not guarentee his future security here, its the Rev Tilson syndrome, the interest of THE PEOPLE comes last to the envious egos of little dictators.
The hosp is a mess only the dedication of some wonderful nurses and doctors prevent disaster.
There is no security and any degenerate can wander off the streets and carry food all over the hospital etc.
