The View From Above

One of the most fascinating things I've seen in Bermuda is the huge satellite photograph of the Island on display at the Aquarium. On my last visit I spent ages poring over it, trying to pick out my house and the Island's major landmarks. Now thanks to Google, anyone can do the same from the comfort of their home.

The satellite images have been added to the Google Maps website following the search engine's acquisition of digital map maker Keyhole Corporation last year. The site allows you to smoothly move around a seamless image of Bermuda and zoom in so close it's even possible to make out individual cars. Only the eastern tip of St. David's is missing. Images are also available for the US and Canada; other locations may be added at a later date.

Impressive.

North Rock, with dive boats!

Yes, you can even see the unfinished school! Let's hope they update this somewhat regularly, that way we can see for ourselves just how much of our money is being wasted in Pembroke.

Good site though, Phil. I spent literally hours last night finding places.

As close as you wanna get:

C'mon Limey. Put some juicy topics on the table to discuss. This is all crap.

I actully manadged to find my familys house (the house we lived in which is being taken care of by relitives. Though it took me a good 30 minutes.

This is really incredible. Thanks for the find!!

Fire put your pants out...not everything is going to be to your liking on this site....so click off instead of being such a Big Baby ^..^

This is all very nice but rubbish compared to what the government has on their intranet mapping server. Unfortunatley they don't let the public use it. You can get ten times closer on it.

OK, how good are you? When were the pics taken?

I know within a couple of days when the one covering the Elys Harbour section of the west end was taken. The central area was taken on a different day.

Any takers?

I could tell you what time it was here. When it was flying over the airport. It appears that the Delta and American flight have just landed. So around noon to 1:00 is the time. It had to be in the summer of last year on a Sunday because nobody is in town.

Can't have been a Sunday...there's a cruise ship in Town. Perhaps a public holiday?

The satellite shots appear to have been taken during Cup Match!

No joke!

Actually It is April/May because the pool at my house i can see is still being dug.

Bye, that's a crown and anchor tent! And St George's is winning!

(The composite image is made up of various shots from different passes/timeframes.)

Tiger you may have the East on your mind...Last time I checked the cup is still up in Somerset...so stop dreaming!!! ^..^

As an alternative, the NASA programme "Worldwind" is free.

Beware - it's a large file (175MB)

With this one, you can go anywhere in the world.

Martin thanks for taking us to infinity and beyond! ^..^

If we could only get closer, hehehe...

This site is just a tad bit more complicated.
But it seems ok.

Phil, I still prefer yours.

Don't know about the shot covering the eastern area but the western shot was taken in the few days after Fabian. Tuesday at the latest. Photo detective work was easy. The shot clearly shows 2 boats, one on the rocks of Bethels Island, the other stranded on a nearby shoal. Both were removed by the Tuesday evening after the storm.

The shot covering Hamilton harbour was taken either earlier that summer or last summer. Again the evidence is a boat & where it is.

Looks like my roof needed painting. As usual.

Look at the lack of green space we have! Sad. Too sad.

But look at all that beautiful ocean around us ^..^

I think the photos were taken right after Fabian: there's a boat in my yard (no, it didn't get blown there, we'd taken it out of the water a few weeks previously) and it's in the position that it fell into after it got blown off the block and timber setup that we had erected. The boat was back in place on the blocks within three days, so it had to be one to three days after Fabian.

Oh, plus the roof's off Tom Wadson's greenhouse and you can see the exposed herb beds. I think Tom had the roof back on within a week, as I helped him offload the shredded plastic roof to some roofless St. George's residents.

Right you are - at least for that segment of the image: damage is visible on the roof at the Southampton Princess and Whaler Inn tennis courts are covered with sand.

However if you slide a bit down to the east, you can see Cup Match campers in the valley alongside Warwick Camp.

I agree, the western shots were taken just after Fabian hit. See the former Sonesta Hotel..

yep. look at the broken finger docks in dockyard and general lack of boats there.

plus you can see Bermuda Oyster up on de rocks next to Prince Alfred Terrace. That was moved very shortly after.

And West End Yachts is jammed!

Where are all the tarpaulins?

LookBermuda now have their own photo map too.

That map is circa 1997. Any idea as to how recent the one on Google is?

Immediately around Fabian. Look at the Southampton Princess roof ... but you can also see Cup Match taking place at Wellington Oval.
