Caption Competition #7 Winners

This week's caption competition featured a meeting between a Bermuda Regiment soldier and Governor Sir John Vereker during the Queen's Birthday Parade. There were a lot of good entries to choose from this week, and I had a particularly hard job choosing between the final six.

The winners were:

First: TJL - "I have a vewy good fwiend in Wome named Biggus Dickus!"

Second: git - "Phat plumage, aceboy"

Third: Rodney Dill - "Sir I must vehemently oppose this dress whites-only policy."

Honourable mentions:

Adjustah - Darth Vereker: Lord of the Pith

Onion- Independence Day Parade: "That'll be all Your Excellency. Thank you for your services. Now take one pace backward, salute, turn smartly to your left, and step off."

Martin - "I don't care what you heard soldier...it's John and Judy not Punch and Judy".

More of the same next Friday.

Limey,

Not one of those items were funny.

My nomination is for

"Another delighted conscript eager to spend his day off standing absolutely still."

ours not to reason why

and

"And with one short comment, His Excellency the Governor had demonstrated the business case for the breath mint."

You write well Phil, but judging humour is not your strength.

bill

Humour is a personal thing. I might find Monty Python's Life of Brian hilarious, you might find it baffling. You might like Everyone Loves Raymond, I might find it asinine. My wife doesn't get the British satirical news quiz Have I Got News For You - I still think it's the funniest programme I've ever seen on TV.

All I can do is judge the caption contests based on what *I* find funny. This means the winners aren't necessarily the "funniest" entries, just those whose sense of humour is closest to mine. Anyway, they're just meant to be a bit of fun. It's the taking part, not the winning, that counts. Don't take them so seriously.

Another thing I find amusing (but which, again, you may not), is that you seem to be posting from the same IP address as that used by the author of one of the entries that you nominated. Are you sure Bill's your real name? ;-)

Ah ha! Trapping IP addresses for the jackbooted thugs at ITO again are we?!! 8)

I think Alex Scott would not find that funny,
but I am laughing! (wide grinned smile)

Oh, stop it Olga!

An interesting point here.

How can they be a "bit of fun" if no one finds them to be funny except you and the winners Limey?

Maybe Paul Merton might consider your choices as having just a touch too much of intellectual snobbery about them?

Phil,

That was the funniest thing to happen to me today.

thanks!

Bill a.k.a. (you know who)

Some may not find the winners funny because of the differnce in hummor.

I know from being exposed to both British and Americian hummor.

Britsh hummour is more Ironic and demeaning in a funny way (Blackadder, 2D-TV, Bredom, Bird and Fortune, Dead Ringers) And i think Monty Python but cant be sure.

Amercian hummour tends to be more slapstick in your face
(Adam Sadler, Jim Carrey)

Just an observation iv made.

Captions are required to be appropriate not neccesarily funny, and many certainly are not.

My personal opinion is that as a humourist Phil "dont give up your day job" humour is either a part of ones personality or it is absent. Just as ones opinion of what is pertinent to a post as you have clearly demonstrated with your personal selectivity is.

However the all over benefits and opportunities your forum provides over rides any perceived personal shortcomings.

Is there anyone who thinks the caption competitions are worth keeping?

"Yes"....I do.

Picking up the point that "humour is a personal thing", maybe you get ask (say) three regulars to judge the entrants?

Should lighten your load, plus might be more representative of the group.

Absolutely! Take no notice of these sad people critising your judgement. It's only a bit of fun for heaven's sake!

Hey,

I just wanted to put in some alternative views on the competition - don't misread me. There is no need to pack up the whole thing at all. Just let me win and I won't complain!

Shark, as for American humour being mostly slapstick I disagree. David Letterman is hardly that. Rowan Atkinson certainly is.

I think there are many shades of humour, and perhaps I simply like a different one.

Please do not pack up the section, Limey.

The caption contests are definitely worth keeping. My favorites may not always win, but I still enjoy reading through the entries. (And personally, I liked this week's winner. Just don't ask about Biggus's wife...)

As for who decides on the winner, I think this should remain The Limey's prerogative. It is his site, after all.

I AGREE WITH FEN...UNLESS SOMEONE WANTS TO VOLUNTEER TO PUT IN THE OBVIOUS HOURS OF TIME THAT PHIL MUST DEDICATE TO THIS SITE, THEN THE WINNER’S SELECTION SHOULD REMAIN HIS CHOICE ONLY..

PHIL…KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, THIS SITE IS GREAT. IT BREAKS UP THE MONOTONY OF THE WORK DAY…I FIND IT ALMOST ADDICTIVE AND CHECK OUT YOUR SITE OFTEN TO SEE HOW MY FELLOW CRACKPOT POSTERS HAVE RESPONDED TO YOUR POSTS & COMMENTS.

Limey keep up this as its fun

Limey, you've got POP and SIZZLE. Hey want a flag?

"Limey, you've got POP and SIZZLE. Hey want a flag?"

See, now THAT was funny.

I appreciate your work on this site Phil. The caption contests have been good fun. I might be a bit jaded though, having 'won' second place :beams with pride:

Keep up the good work.
