The Bulls, Unveiled
Almost three months ago, I posted about the wonderful origami-style statue of two bulls that appeared outside Bull's Head parking lot last year. Since its installation, however, it's been hidden under a green tarpaulin, apparently waiting on an official unveiling by Hamilton Mayor Lawson Mapp.
The shrouding of this great piece of art quickly became a daily source of irritation to me, as I walk past it every morning on my way to work. Yesterday I even resolved to put in a call to the Corporation of Hamilton to find out why Mr. Mapp still seemed to be having difficulty finding time to unveil it.
But then, presto! On my way back to the car this evening, the tarpaulin had gone, revealing the statue in all its glory.
Well actually, the tarpaulin had just been scrunched up and left at the statue's base. And I heard nothing on this evening's news to say that there had been an official unveiling today. So whether another frustrated art lover finally snapped and tore down the damn cover themselves, I don't know. (I must admit, the thought had crossed my mind too.)
The statue has been prematurely unveiled once before; that time it was on display for just a few days before some workmen covered it back up. In case a similar thing happens again, you might want to go and check it out while you still can.
But if this was an unofficial unveiling, the Corporation of Hamilton should nonethless just toss that tarp in the trash. They've had more than long enough to do things properly. Now it's time to let us enjoy the statue itself.

"We are pleased that the Corporation Of Hamilton has taken on the tremendous and admirable task of beautifying the municipal parking facilities in our bustling urban centre. This is yet another example of how Bermuda is committed to adding POP and SIZZLE to our tourism product, and underlines our dedication to pursuing a social agenda. No longer can the UBP ask 'where's the beef?' Ladies and gentlemen, the beef is here and that's no bull!"
- Quote from Minister Dr Ewart Brown. Maybe.
Seriously - the statue is cool!

Oh yes - our famous statues outside of public parking lots... almost rivals our famous pink beaches as a way to drive the tourists to our shores...almost.
