UN Publishes Independence Mission Report

The United Nations has just published the report of the visit to Bermuda by its Decolonisation Committee earlier this year.

It tries to be even-handed, but as might be expected from a body that refuses to accept that some colonies may actually prefer to remain that way, you can't help but feel it's having a dig at Bermuda's current status.

The Bermuda Independence Commission was due to submit its final report to the Premier by the end of last month. Hopefully he'll make it public soon.

"A United Nations mission sent to review the status of British dependency Bermuda says it found that Bermudians had little knowledge of their political options under international law, knew nothing of the international organizations they could join right now and still suffered from the legacy of racial segregation."

...The mission stressed that it took no position on what choices Bermudians ought to make.......

bullshit!

Thank you Congo, Dominica, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste for sharing your experiences with us. Now, please go away.

Yes its nice to see we have the backing of the Republic of Congo. Now there's a nation Bermuda should aspire to be more like.

[warning, non-constructive post]

Ack! I was just flipping through that report. I keep seeing the word racial popping out at me. I can't walk down the street without thinking about race, race relations. whatever. I am so mad and pissed off about it all that I don't know what to do about it! I am so fed up! I want to jump up and down in Reid Street, stamping my feet, and yelling Ack Ack Ack (or something like that) at the top of my lungs.

Only 10 months back home, and I'm already jaded on this topic, which is important to me...
