Sculpting with sand

21_gombeyThis year marked the 10th anniversary of Bermuda's annual Sandcastle Competition, which was held at Horseshoe Bay beach yesterday.

When I arrived at the beach at 3pm, three-quarters of the way through the alloted construction time, I was disappointed by the quality of the entries. But the final hour saw huge improvements to most of the sculptures and by the time the competitors had to lay down their spades at 4pm the judges had many great entries to choose from.

The winners of the adult category were Hannah Emmerson and friends, with their magnificent sculpture of a gombey (pictured).

I've added photos of some of the entries to the Sandcastle Competition photo album that I started after last year's contest. The pictures from this year begin here.
