A photographer in Bermuda

Kieth Flaherty is perplexed by the lack of a Bermuda camera club. As a result, he's started a blog "to discuss photography in general with a heavy bias on Bermuda and meet all those hidden hobbyists here on The Rock".

"There are thousands of camera clubs all over the world and the benefits to the members of each are obvious: meeting other photographers, discussions, group trips, critiquing, arranging workshops, etc etc. So why none here and I wonder if there ever was one?

Equally strange is the complete lack of workshops held by the local Professional fraternity (the Bermuda Professional Photographic Association's web site doesn't appear to have been updated in months (if not years))!?"

I'd suggest he starts by checking out Tom Quinn's excellent photoblog, Paradise Found, and flickr's Bermuda group. Does anyone else know of any other places to find Bermuda's amateur photographers?

Hey you guys.... My name is Stephan and I run www.sjdworld.com. My site features Bermudian and none Bermudian Photographers, artist, Designers and Poets...We have monthly guest artist features and much more…So its one place to start if your looking for local photography, art or design.

I have really noticed with the BPPA they do not update their site at all. It has been the same for so as long as I have known of the website. I really think Bermuda should have a photographers assocciation, especially for amateur photographers (such as myself). I hardly meet any other photographers in Bermuda and I am aware that there is a good amount. So far I have been a self taught photographer of about 1-2 years. I wish that there we lectures or seminars to attend so that I can learn more.

e-mail me if you have any imput, would be nice to start up a group for amateur/semi-professional photographers

The Bermuda Society of Arts usually have an annual photographic show at City Hall. This is open to traditional as well as digital photography. Not sure when the next show is, but as far as I know it is the only opportunity for photographers to show their talents to the general public. Unfortunately their web site hasn't been updated for 2006 yet, but I will try to find out when the show will be and post it here.

Found it, the BSofA Photographic Show runs from April 28th to may 18th, 2006. 292-3824 is the contact number, the curator there is very helpful and he may already have info on clubs etc.

no the BSOA is pretty good, they show photography through out the year, not just from April to May.

I know they are good, I have been a member forever. The show I was referring to is purely photography, nothing else, the other shows have photos mixed in with other media. Typically the more serious photographers enter the photo show. Last years show was amazing, we have a lot of talent here.

The BPPA site is in the process of being updated. We have had a big problem with our web designer, who would not put up posts and updates and changes. In true Bermuda fashion it took considerable time to resolve this problem. We are keeping the site up as is for now but expect changes in the near future. BPPA have conducted workshops and one member in particular does so all the time.Check out Lloyd Webbe. This fall the BPPA will be holding a joint show at city hall. Finally the BPPA site and members are constantly helping other photographers both here and abroad on an active bases. All you have to do is use the BPPA contact info if you need help. BPPA executive member Graeme Outerbridge ^..^

One other thought for keen photographers both advanced and just starting. The Maine Photographic Workshops put on fantastic workshops all through the year. Summer is the best time to attend with some of the worlds best photographers as Teachers. Google Maine Photographic Workshops. There is photographic help there at all levels. ^..^

Just writing to let all the photographers out there know that there is a place in my site where they can publicise their websites:

http://www.bermuda4u.com/Directory/bermuda_directory_photographers.html

It ranks #1 on Google for the phrse 'Bermuda photographers' - the most popular search phrase for this topic.

Instant fame for your website!!!

All you need to do is link to my site and complete the simple form.

Phil, thanks for the post.

For some time I’ve been trying to work out a convenient way for other amateur photographers to convene. Peter at the BSoA was helpful in introducing me to a couple of like-minded people. A Yahoo group was setup but that was a bit of a failure. I tried using the “Bermuda Calendar” in the RG but was rejected because it “wasn’t a club meeting in a physical place”.

Anyway, your post may just be the catalyst to get everyone together as a first step towards eventually setting up the “Camera Club of Bermuda” – who knows?

Graeme, thanks for the tip on Lloyd Webb. When you say check him out, where do you mean? I can’t find any website or info. You may recall I emailed you a few months back re workshops in Bermuda and you said there would be some in “the Spring” – look forward to hearing more.

The Maine Workshops are excellent. I’d actually booked up for a course in June but it was just cancelled. Also, Cig Harvey who used to work here is making her name as a Pro in the US (www.cigharvey.com) and teaches there.

I’m also talking with a company in Nova Scotia (easy to get to/from) and may try and arrange a Bermuda group weekend workshop.

Kelly, got your post – thanks, I’ll email you to discuss further.

I will contact the people who replied above and see where it takes us.

All the best, and thanks again.

Keith there used to be a Camera club that met out at the Sub Aqua Clubs building at Admiralty Park.Go see Tim Hogdson at the Mid-Ocean News and have them do an article on your idea.Lloyd is in the book...just look up his number.Maine has excellent workshops and so does Santa Fe....Also my good friend Roddy Smith is taking a group to Argentina...if you want to Tango with your camera. Google his site and you can get any info you need under workshops.Roddy is one of the best black and white shooters in the States. I think that covers it. all the best "Click" da ^..^

Thanks for the post and link. Enjoying your blog immensely.

since my discovery of jpgmag.com and 28mm.org some time ago (as well as a few others), i've been wanting to set up a monthly (possibly fortnightly?) photography showcase/ezine, but have never really known where to begin. of course, i tried the photoblogs directory, but bermudians seemed to be out of the question - at the time i looked, paradise found hadn't even been enlisted.

however.. that has (hopefully) now changed and, due to the popularity of PW/LIB, the concept of blogging and photologging now has been unveiled to at least a few residents. i dropped the term by tamell simons (of the RG) and he hadn't a clue what i was talking about - and he's a professional!

i suppose the point of this comment comes down to two things:

i) the aforementioned ezine. if anyone is interested (criteria: camera + eye) PLEASE drop me a line. i can handle the back end of everything just fine. i just need people to contribute.

in addition to capturing bermuda through more than only my eyes, it also gives your work exposure, and - because of commenting - also enables you to recieve constructive feedback, ergo improved future work.

ii) if anyone is interested in photoblogging in general, i have plenty of space on my server and would be more than willing to get you on your feet.

and i think thats it.

Just a quick note, the government continuing education program offers photography courses each year. Lloyd Webbe does several of these. I'd attempted to get on the advanced course going this year, and it was suspended due to lack on interest! (they only need 8 people to make up a course ) Within 2 days of hearing this, I managed to fill the entire course with 8 advanced level photographers. I never was able to get contact information for the others that were looking to participate, but hopefully they'll be back for the next course. I had the same experience with language courses offered. Let's hope we'll see a lot more photographers out and about shooting and sharing their experiences.

Hello.

Apologies in advance for this blatant bump.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Bermuda Camera Club is alive and kicking with 19 members signed up. We have monthly assignments and meet every month. If anyone is interested please go to our website at http://bermudacameraclub.ning.com where you can login using “guest1” and “guest1” and have a look around.

Alec, do you have any more info on that advanced course I can post over there?

All the best.
