Blogging in Barbados

I was amazed to learn today that the PLP’s ideological cousin, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), has a blog.

Moreover, last month they publicly thanked the Barbados Free Press, one of their most vocal blog critics, for giving them "a lot of technical help and inspiration in getting the blog going".

And all this despite having a Deputy Prime Minister who last week called for the introduction of a "framework of accountability" for Bajan blogs, warning that otherwise they "will marginalise our existence as parliaments and will cause disrespect, not just for the rule of law, but for the institutions that are required to keep our societies safe".

Naturally, the BLP use their blog to toot their own horn. However, they allow comments on it too. Indeed, they even seem to allow comments critical of their own performance as Barbados’ governing party. To top it all, they're planning a live online comment session with Prime Minister Owen Arthur in the near future. I’m impressed.

Perhaps our Premier should give Mr. Arthur a call and ask him about it.

The PLP already has it's own blog. It's called "a limey in Bermuda". They get more constructive criticism here than they know what to do with. Now if they were to keep you on their mailing list all the better.

Top of the morning to you Limey!

We hadn't seen your blog before, but saw some hits from your link to our story, so we thought we'd stop around.

I read a few of your posts and like your edgy style, so I've taken the liberty of putting up a permanent link to your blog on our sidebar.

Cheers,

Clive

Does their blog filter out Plantation questions?

Do politicians have to spell stuff phonetically...sorry, that was a tough one...fon-et-ick-lee?

Phil,

Of course, that they have such a blog, and use it for soliciting constructive critisism, is because Barbados is an independent island nation.

LOL - glad to hear you are on a first name basis with The Limey P.

The blog will become one of the mechanisms that we hold parliamentarians to account. The notion that they are our elected members seems to have gone out the window.

It's our money and our island. We have the right to challenge and question in what ever way we like.

Heah Blog Mon!!! Don't bring the Government Down.Your powerful digital thoughts are causing a BIG panic in dis virtual world!!!Maybe the Barbados Government will make these bloggers stop being Rude Boys! Rasta ^..^
