Green Day
As you've probably noticed by now, I'm supporting Green Day.
Although I initially thought the Botanical Gardens was the least bad option for the location of the new hospital, the subsequent debate has convinced me that there may be other options, after all. While I won't support rebuilding around the current building until I'm convinced that it can be done without a construction mistake putting patients' lives at risk, building on the Botanical Gardens no longer seems like the only way of avoiding this. If they can be saved, so much the better.

Green Day's first few albums were great. Now everything they do sounds the same.

Well, the Isle of Man built a massive, new showpiece hospital a few years ago, one big hospital to serve the island, and closed the two old hospitals down. The IOM government are now starting to realise that although the new hospital is central, it can take up to an hour in traffic to get to the hospital from the extremities of the Island, let alone the time it takes to get the ambulance to the casualty in the first place. They are now considering building accident and emergency centres / small holpitals at either end of the Island to help the situation.
Perhaps Bermuda could learn from this and build two small hospitals, one on each ex US base, and then re-vamp/ re-build the KEMH. Perhaps that would avoid a costly mistake of the sort the IOM Government seems to be very good at!

Bandit - hear hear, that's exactly what I and others have been advocating in the threads on this topic.

Forgot to mention that there is a poll about the hospital over on the RG website for those who are interested..

You only have so much green space left in Bermuda - it would be a shame to lose it for future generations. On that note, I was rather shocked on my last visit to discover that there is no real significant recycle program in place. You would think that on an island of Bermudas size (or lack thereof) that the environment would be of greater concern. It seems the opposite is true though - we have very extensive recycle programs in place here in Western Canada and the recycling volume in many households exceeds garbage volume by a fair amount. I was dismayed to see the Spittal Pond Nature reserve riddled with refuse as well. Hopefully this hospital issue elevates environmental issues to a greater place in Bermuda's political scene.
