An odd sort of role model
Julian Hall was on the radio news this morning, holding Premier Ewart Brown up as an example to Bermuda’s youth.
Was it because Dr. Brown has shown that the colour of his skin is no barrier to wealth or high office? Was it because of Dr. Brown’s achievements during his time in government? No, Mr. Hall thinks Dr. Brown is a great example to the young because of what he said to Grant Gibbons on Friday evening. According to Mr. Hall, that’s the sign of a confident black man.
What message does this send? Hey, kids, if someone asks you a question that you don’t want to answer, just question their motives for asking. If they’re white, call them a racist (just be careful not to call them a dog). If they suggest that your behaviour has been inappropriate, change the subject by asking them about an instance when you think they behaved badly. And if they say anything about your girl, well, it’s just fine to threaten to physically assault them.
Yes, a great role model indeed.

For an educated and talented man, Julian Hall says the most stupid things.

sandgrownan - couldn't agree with you more.
The good thing is I have an awful lot of faith in our youth who are not only smarter and more talented but they have a heck of a lot more bandwidth to work with.

I second that. I consider Julian Hall to be smart but maybe not so much in the common sense department apparently. All that is is the PLP putting their same tired old spin on it as to how we all viewed it all the wrong way etc etc. *YAWN* didn't see any of this coming!!!

Yup, saw Mr. Hall on the news last night verbalising that complete and utter c**p about how the great honourable P was a good example - to say that my jaw hit the floor would be an understatement!

Why do I not like the way this Island is going?
At the risk of being shot to flames, I almost have a fear of riding the buses these days, in case I'm asked to give up my seat.
I have to agree with SG, Julian has portrayed himself as a intelligent guy who both thinks and communicates well. One must wonder what motivated him to utter such banal rubbish.

If only Julian could be disbarred from publically speaking stupidly....

Okay, so this comes at a poor time given Friday's events, but other than that, surely becoming a Doctor, then a prominent polician, and finally a permier is a pretty admirable career path? I know I'd rather Bermuda's youth follow him to University and then to a professional degree then what many do. His character may have faults, but as someone to follow in footsteps goes, there are much worse.

Maybe Julian feels that as he plans on returning to Bermuda soon and is confident of being reinstated with the help of a few friends, that he is acting in a politically expedient way in his own best interest ?
On the talk show the other day he spent most of the afternoon promoting himself and attacking bloggers by indicating that he would be watching closely if any hint of libelous comments were being made.
Hows this ?
Julian Hall is the perfect example of the perfect role model for all young aspiring Bermudians ?

Bermuda:
"Where the inmates run the asylum"...(A Julian quote)
My friend Julian Hall and I have had many a discussion about the insanity of the politics in Bermuda.
He has seen it all. He has been on and under, up and down on all sides of the political landscape in Bermuda.
He, like me, has been "DIFFERENT" to the many conventionals that lead their Bermy lives.
We have both spoke of our exasperation over the state of our nation.
If Bermuda goes down the road to racism hell, with Premiers getting even with the past, whilst silk suiting themselves and riding the high life of Cristal and Beluga, then my desire to live in this INSANE BERMUDA, will fast come to and end.
I have mixed feelings about Bermuda, how we have messed it up as a result of political WARFARE and RACISM, but if we don't stop this MADNESS, Bermuda will be a living hell. As it is we have "PAVED PARADISE" lost our Bermy identity to Reinsurance Conglomerates and fat cats avoiding taxes in their own country's.
Meanwhile the sheep just think it will all be fine and dandy.
WAKE UP and take back your country, your jobs and your identity.
It is time to run Bermuda for the BEST INTERESTS of ALL BERMY's.
Apparently we have a long way to go based on the antics in parliament this week.
When Dr. Brown said the UBP will be "banished into obscurity", his cocksure arrogance might just come to bite him in his ass come election time.
However, Dr. Brown who dodged every question I ever posed to him regarding "RACE ISSUES", has shown to me and many others that he will fan the fires of the past.
The next election looks like being the nastiest race dividing debacle ever forced on the people of Bermuda.
Dr. Brown needs to take the high road, and do it quickly before he "BURNS DONE THE HOUSE".
God Bless Bermuda, and may he save Bermuda and our politicians from this madness.

It seems we are gradually becoming a country awash with 'confident black men' Julian names Dr. Brown, I name the ever so confident 'Colonel' I am charmed by the rhetoric of both of these 'confident black men' But just a moment, didn't my friend Julian have a little problem with one of these confident black men - something about a train wreck? Now I am deeply confused, please help me Julian which of these confident black men am I supposed to applaud the loudest? They both tell me they are confident but your support seems to waiver for one of them. I wonder what could give one more charm than the other in your judgement?
Perhaps I should just vote for people who are less confident but do not consistently malign the 'other' Bermudians who make up a mere 30% or so of the electorate.
Wake up all of you confident males. We are all Bermudians and we only have 21 square miles to get along. It's time to start 'feeling the love'

You want to know the kind of people you are dealing with? Have a look see at http://www.bermuda.org.uk and read a nice story about Julian and the Miranda enquiry. I for one have not forgotten.

But Julian is right! They are the comments of a confident black man. There are many kinds of confident men. Bush Junior is a confident man. He showed the admirable quality of confidence when he went to fight in Iraq. Yes the PLP is confident. They repeatedly remind me of the republicans - confident to the point of hubris. And the UBP? They are the democrats. Shiftless, planless, and easy to hit. They just don't fight back.
(Yes I know the dems won recently, but not because they are any good. Expect a swing to the right in two years)

Limey, most sensible people stopped paying any attention to Julian Hall years ago, why bother giving him any 'airtime'on your blog?

The honorable Dr. Brown is coming to speak at Berkeley today... Sigh* As a student i wish i had something good to say to him.

Julian Hall is the only man involved in the mess that is Bermudian politics that i have any respect for. As a young bermudian studying abroad, i am always depressed to log on to this site and read more of how Bermuda is falling into a political and ethical quagmire. The most disturbing thing is that i know just how racist your precious youth is, as a kid, i was always terrified of the black children, not because of parental influences, no, because i was CONSTANTLY threatened by young black bermudian 'comrades'. Im not sure whether thats been sorted out in the youth now, but i know that thats when i felt the first effects of this new reverse racism which has been spiralling out of context repaeatedly.
I hope that people like Julian can rise above this bs and stop Bermuda falling into more hatred inspired madness.

Another excellent commentary by Tom Vesey. Just re-inforces - do we want a comedian or a leader? Next time I see Ewart drive by with the top down I think I'm going to point at him. And laugh.
